If you have time, add on a day or two to make the most of your travel to the Philadelphia area! Listed here are some of our favorites that are family-friendly too.
1. Explore the Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art has an amazing collection from ancient civilizations to modern masterpieces. Your family will be able to see so many of your favorite CMEC artists studied over the years. Children really love to visit the cloister in the medieval section, the Arms & Armor collection, and the Japanese ceremonial tea house. Pair your visit with a walk along the nearby Schuylkill River Trail or a picnic on the museum grounds!
2. Step into the Birthplace of America: Old City Walking Tour
Old City offers a self-guided walkable journey through America’s founding story. Begin at the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where children can see where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated. Continue to Elfreth’s Alley, the nation’s oldest residential street, which brings colonial daily life into focus. Add stops at Benjamin Franklin’s Printing Press, the Betsy Ross House, and Historic Christ Church for some of our favorite historic places.
3. Experience the American Story at the Museum of the American Revolution
After the CMEC’s study of 1650-1800 this past year, this museum brings the Revolutionary era to life through immersive exhibits, hands-on activities, and engaging storytelling. Families can see original artifacts, walk through interactive galleries, and follow the personal stories of people who lived through the Revolution.
4. Discover Nature & History at Valley Forge National Historical Park
Just outside the city, Valley Forge National Historical Park combines the history of the American Revolution and a beautiful 3,500 acre park to enjoy walking trails, explore historic buildings, and imagine what life was like for George Washington’s army during the winter encampment. It’s an ideal way to balance city sightseeing with fresh air and open space. There is no entrance fee and all sorts of things to do.
Of course, it’s hard to narrow down our choices to just four! If you have more time, other favorites include the Barnes Foundation Museum, the Philadelphia Zoo, the Franklin Fountain for ice cream, and a stop for good eats at the Reading Terminal Market. Don’t miss Philly soft pretzels, a great Philly cheesesteak, and Pennsylvania Dutch specialties too!
